hi,
I have Norton Anti Virus 2002, all up to date with latest definitions.
Also running Zone Alarm's free version.

Have noticed recently that on starting up my PC Norton is disabled even tho'
set to be activated on start up
and ZA is set to recognise Norton as antivirusware.

I did a system scan and there is no prob everything is good.
Is there another setting that I've missed, don't understand why this has
just recently been happening.... I can enable
Norton after PC has finished start up (which is slow.... PC is about 4-5yrs
old perhaps too old??)

Running a P4 2.00GHz with 256 RAM, 40gb HDD that is 1/2 full, with XP Home
2002 and service pack 2.

thanks, any suggestions to fix this annoying prob welcome.

Norton 2002 is outdated and should be replaced by a more recent version.
(My opinion but don't replace it with another Norton product)

Try one of these
http://www.kaspersky.com/
http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm I use this one.

An update FYI !!!

I've recently installed spybot and run and removed some spyware,
this seems to have solved the problem below !!!
interesting the lengths some spyware will go to ....
