| David, hello.
|
| I am running 98se, and followed your suggestion to the o/p but found
| nothing myself under c:\program files\java,,,, so I did a seach of c:\
| and
| found ::--
| 1)java folder in c:\windows
| 2)1/2dozen .dll's in c:\windows\system... + couple of .hlp files and 1 .vxd.
| 3)java folder in c:\program files\common files,, of which contained 2
| .inc's.
|
| The stuff in the folder in ' 1) ' is::
| 1) 4sub-folders;; one had about 8 .zips and one had about 8 .dat's.....
| the
| other two folders had zilch.
| The stuff in folder ' 3)' is::
| 1) just two .inc files.
|
| There were no .exe's in any and no dates or times or versions that I could
| see.
| So what is all the hype about java and can you give me a 'in ya face' scaled
| down version of what java is.....
| tia
| (oh, and seeing as my computer is fine, should I be doing something about
| java;;; or updating or whatever?)
|

If you do NOT have a folder; C:\Program Files\Java
then you are not using Sun Java. You are instead using the OEM version provided
to
Microsoft called the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM).

Okay, I looked, & I definately do Not have a C:\Program Files\Java
folder.... even though as mentioned prior I have java 'mentions' on
this
computer after doing a *.java search.

So, what do you recommend dave..... the computers running okay, its
been this way now for over 3 years; should I start feeling that I need to
do something re: java or is it only something that is for specialised areas
of computing and not necessary for every-day blokes like me.
What areas of the computer are affected by Java? What should I look
out for that will point out that I need java.
tia

Basically Sun is the creator of the Java language. Sun licensed the software to
Microsoft
with certain conditions. Microsoft was allowed to distribute Java with the OS
and update
its version as needed. However, Microsoft thought they should re-invent the
wheel and
violated the terms of the license agreement. Sun sued Microsoft and Microsoft
lost.

If you NEED Java is debateable. Some gov't. depend upon Java Applets so those
who work in
those circles require Java and Sun Java is the way to go. To average home user
may never
require it. However, some content may be lost with out it.

This side-thread came about becuase I mentioned about bvulnerabilities in oldder
Sun Java
versions. Microsoft's OEM version also has vulnerabilities but Microsoft
provides patches
through its own Windows Update distribution system.

The important thing that should be mentioned here is that software may have
vulnerabilities
(Examples: Apple QuickTime, Adobe Flash, Sun Java, RealAudio, etc.) one must
mitigate the
vulnerabilities to help avoid getting infected by malware that may try to exploit
vulnerabilities.

One way to tell if your PC has vulnerabilities is to use Secuia's Software
Inspector.
