Both AVAST and AVG have been recommended to me by folks I respect. Which is
generally considered to be better? (I will be using the anti-virus with ME
and 98SE.)

Is it woth paying the little extra for the paid-for version?

Well, AVG has higher detection rate but it depends on you.The one you like
will be your for free :-)

Q: Is it worth paying the little extra for the paid-for version?
A: Again , it depends on you. I would recommend you buy antivirus(paid one I
mean) if you want to be more protected. You can have a look at Nod32 for paid
version which costs $39 for one licence for 1 pc.

Also,to be more secure, you can buy a router with firewall integrated and
also keep software firewall like ZoneAlarm. Also keep antispyware programs
like Ad-Aware SE Personal and SpyBot S&D.Have a look in my web-site for more
information:

"Protect your PC" section

(No matter what AV software you choose, always try before you buy/start to use)
