I currently use Mcafee virus software but I've had several problems e.g.
machine crashes and reboots. Does windows XP prefer Norton anitvirus or does
it also cause XP to crash?

McAfee offers Anti Virus software.

A PC crashing and rebooting is rarely the effect of AV software so it shouldn't
make a
difference if you are using McAfee, Norton or any other AV vendor's software.

If you want to replace it adhoc, I can suggest Kaspersky and NOD32.

I also suggest you do the following to make sure that malware is not the cause
of your
problems.

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser
Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go
through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal
Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the
PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you
can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded
the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode
[F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run
in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive
PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

* * * Please report back your results * * *

How could you even think that an Operating System like Windowd prefers Norton
(or any other security software).
No ,that is not true.You can use any software you like and think it ensures
your PC security.

Because of the fact your say the PC crahses and reboots ,scan with :

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Panda Software free Active Scan,where you can check your
PC for ALL TYPES of security threats and clean viruses and worms

Then,only if you find infections ,perform these malware removal instrctions
,wriiten by me:
http://free.hit.bg/fightmalware/Malware%20remove.txt

If your PC is clean of malware ,check the processor speed and the RAM amount.
If you'd like to have a stable and perfectly run PC,you need at least 512 mb
RAM and at least 1200-1500 Mhz processor

If "McAfee really doesn't like " your pc (or even if you don't like McAfee
any more) I believe you should have a look and try the following :

@ F-prot AV for Windows
(it is very good ,small AV software , the onliest disadvantage it has is
that F-prot is updated once in 3 days which is very bad for new and fast
spread malware)

that's why you also need

@ Panda TruPrevent personal

More info about TruPrevent ,here:
http://free.hit.bg/fightmalware/TruPrevent.txt

Uninstall your McAfee and then download their free 30 days trial versions
and test
You'll be happy.Then ,you can buy them.
One year subscription for them both will cost you $ 60 a year.

Don't forget that the software above is just my personal opinion.You may not
follow it.The other may think different.

Simon (A likely story) you should not consider any antivirus program
adequate these days since they do not scan for such things as spyware which
may also be the cause of your system crashes.

Personally I do not like McAfee or Norton because both have their problems,
in fact I use the free version of AVG which seems just as good but much less
greedy with resources. Kaspersky is not cheap but was also good last time I
tested it and both Panda and Trend Micro systems seem okay. My company uses
Trend corporate and has almost not trouble. I don't sell any of these
products so that's simply an honest opinion.

Avast is a free one I just remembered but can't claim any experience, others
say it's good.

What I would do in your place (to save spending money I don't need to spend)
is sign up for Avast or AVG and uninstall what you have at present. Stop the
present one running when windows starts and reboot the system before
uninstall so the uninstall is as clean as possible. Install the free one for
your protection while testing.

If that fixes the problem and you seem to be okay after a few days then it
probably was the original system causing trouble. If you still get trouble
then look for spyware and other things. FYI here are some spyware references
just in case.

Important - LSP-Fix
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Be aware that using either of these to actually remove spyware can result in
some programs refusing to work, in other words "Free" programs that you
downloaded on condition you accepted ads and so called "Research" may get
broken and you might want to uninstall them first. Some spyware actually
breaks Windows trying to force it's way in and you should arm yourself with
LSP-Fix before starting in case you lose internet connectivity.
