Last night I tried to run the typical virus scan, Adaware and S&D. Virus
scan came up clean as did Adaware but when I tried to start S&D it just
closed down. First time that's happened. Known bug or do I have other
issues? WinXP home,
256 RAM, SP1 only. I've got the SP2 disk but hesitant about installing. I
know it's got to be done to get further updates but still really leery.

Remove it and download SpyBot S&D v1.4 and update it.

As you've already been told (and you're definately on the right track so
keep it up) update Spybot. Install and run it in safe mode I suppose. It's
not a bad idea to grab a third opinion and get Microsoft's AntiSpyware beta.
It's free but still a beta product but it's unlikely to hose your system.
Using all three applications go ahead and add a virus scan to the mix.
Reboot into safe mode and scan away if you think you've ANY reason to worry.
Installing SP2 on a system with malware in place is a recipe for disaster as
I am pretty convinced you know or you'd not have asked. So when you have it
all clean (or you're at least 99% sure it's clean as there's no such thing
as 100% in reality) go ahead and do your SP2 installation. I'd recommend
that you completely disconnect from the net, disable your security software
of all types and do your install that way just to be a bit more certain that
it will run smoothly. One more thing to consider is that if you use third
party security applications that you might download the newest installers to
ensure you have the newest and most compatable software after you've
installed SP2. From there? Make sure you get it installed soon and turn on
the firewall if you're not using a third party firewall and do the updates.

Tried MS Antispyware. Didn't play nice with my system so I tanked it. Thanks
for the input.
