I recently learned that my neighbor has been eavesdropping on
conversations in my house using the computer, and he did not keep
these conversations to himself. My work is on the computer so I was on
the internet constantly. He must have used a trojan as the software
and hardware firewall was useless. Symantic just found Trojan.SpamThru
on my machine, but I doubt this is the trojan responsible for the
eavesdropping as this was going on for at least 10 mos. - perhaps
longer. Any suggestions on how to protect myself? I've run several of
the free trojan software once I first learned of this as well as
Symantic and at that time found nothing. I do not have a wireless set-
up. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Paranoia ?
Radio listening device ?

The concept "eavesdropping on conversations" does NOT lend itself to a Trojan on
a computer
that easily.

Hell, bounce a laser beam off a window and one can "eavesdrop" on voice
communications in a
building.

Eavesdropping thru computers most CERTAINLY can occur by trojans. I've
seen the software for sale myself in electronics magazines! Even the
anonymous phone bureau suggested such. These crimes have been
mentioned in the news. This is nothing new. This is reality not
paranoia. With text to voice and voice to text software (and very
inexpensive I may add) along with mics being built into the
motherboards, such software most certainly can and have bee developed.
I'm surprised you're aware of the lazers for sale and not the trojans.

As I stated...
The concept "eavesdropping on conversations" does NOT lend itself to a Trojan on
a computer
that easily.

I am not saying it is impossible, I am saying it is improbable and highly
unlikely.

First the neighbour has to have the capability to write/obtain said Trojan that
would send
either an audio stream to the neighbour's house or 3rd party web site.

Second you must assume that the microphone is always on as well as the PC and the
conversations are taking place with x feet of said microphone.

Third you must exaplin HOW said Trojan was installed.

The fact that it is possible should not sway one to believe that it is actually
being done.
Based upon my experience and workplace training it is my belief that IFF the
neighbour is
listening on to one's home conversations it is NOT done via the PC and a Trojan
but by a bug
based transmitter.

You stated; "...seen the software for sale myself in electronics magazines!"
I have also seen X-Ray vision glasses advertised in magazines.

Ok, thanks for explaining. It's a relief that it's not easy. That
means it won't become an every day occurance.
