I hope these two newsgroups are appropriate for this question.

We're a network integration/support company with small/medium business
clients. One client is a security/alarm company running SBS2003 Premium and
a recent upgrade to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate v10. The prmary business
application uses MS SQL Server for is database functions.

The application vendor's tech support recently made a blanket statement to
my client that Symantec AV products cause terrible performance hits, to the
tune of 20-30% on a server, and recommended other av products. When
pressed, they said the issue was specifically with SQL Server-based
applications.

Aside from not respecting such out-of-the-blue blanket statements, I'm
trying to determine if there is in fact a known performance problem with SAV
Corp and SQL Server, and if there are solutions/workarounds.

Symantec's Tech Support Web site and KB don't show anything related. So I'm
asking here from the Microsoft perspective. Assume SAV Corp implementation
on the SBS2003 server according to Symantec's best practices
recommendations.

Thanks,
Milo Brown

I haven't heard about any general problems with Symantec AV Corporate
Edition and SQL Server. We use CE 9 and I haven't noticed anything, but our
SQL Server systems are pretty lightly loaded.

I have heard RUMORs that CE 10 is a "disaster". Neither source (one of whom
was in a position to very much be in the know) has provided details, so I
take the claim with a large grain of salt. But I'm always interested in
getting more details so we can factor them into our plans for an upgrade to
CE 10.

As with all resident AV programs, you need to exclude the actual DATA
BASE database files, just like any real-time database, you can't let AV
scanners access them while they are also being accessed by the APP/OS.

If you blindly install AV software and don't exclude the Exchange Mail
stores, the temp expansion folder for SMS (if you use it), the database
data/log file folders, etc... you will have serious performance issues,
but any IT person worth anything already knows that. I suggest that your
support person is just a flunky that doesn't really understand anything
and has just adopted the foot-in-mouth method.

One thing you can also do - disable the Network drives scanning on the
server itself, there is no reason to scan network drives if the accessed
network drives also have AV software on those systems.
