Stinger just stops running - why? dontspam 12-02-2007

Earlier this week, my Kaspersky antivirus software starting
interfering with my launching Firefox 2.0.0.10. This was right after
FF had upgraded to that version, and Kaspersky was preventing the SSL
part of FF from loading.

I tried a bunch of things and Kaspersky still flagged FF. I
eventually "solved" the FF issue by uninstalling and reinstalling it.

But one of the things I did was to download a new version of Stinger
(3.8.0, built September 10, 2007) and run that. I've run it in normal
mode and more recently in safe mode, and whenever I've run it, I've
had problems.

The first times I ran it, it would just stop running while scanning
the file backup.exe from the program files\MozBackup directory
(MozBackup was freeware I used once, when porting my Firefox setup
from an old computer to my current on). I tried uninstalling
MozBackup and it was reported that "some parts couldn't be
uninstalled." I finally wound up starting in DOS mode and manually
deleting the backup.exe file.

After that, each time I ran Stinger, still in normal mode, my computer
itself would eventually just lock up and I'd have to manually restart
it (when Stinger would stop running the first times, every other part
of my computer ran fine, and even in Stinger, I could click on "About"
or try to stop the scan). This happened several times.

Now today, I have some time on my hands, so I restarted in Safe Mode
and ran Stinger, and this time it flew through the files it was
scanning until it got to C:\Program
Files\MsnMusic26251\MsnMusic.exe and then it just sat there for 20
minutes until I restarted my computer. MsnMusic is a 536k file that
it should scan in an eyeblink.

I've used earlier versions of stinger and never had any problems (nor
have I ever had it detect anything). What's going on here?

My computer is running XP SP2. It's regularly virus scanned by
Kaspersky every day and has always come up clean (and continues to
come up clean). Kaspersky also "blessed" the MsnMusic.exe and
backup.exe files that were stopping stinger. I have regularly-updated
spybot and ad-aware on my computer and run these once a week, and
other than benign advertising tracking cookies from my browser, they
never find anything.

Hope the above information is helpful. Even though I can use my
computer fine, regularly, I'm bothered that "something" might be wrong
with it, and I'd like to know what else I can do to investigate.

Not sure if this will help with your problem but I've found that KAV is
rather sensitive to other programs. This program that KAV offers, GSI
Parser, will analize your system and tell you if there's any potential
conflicts.

I have gone to this site and am waiting on receiving the activation
email from Kaspersky.

You may have a big problem: You can't use your computer in a productive way
anymore, because most of your work time goes by with scanning for ad- and
spyware and viruses.
You can spend your time for a more productive experience: try out linux.

Forgive me if you are working as a beta-tester for this sort of software.

A bit more information to go with the above:

1. Yes, my system restore is turned off as I run the stinger program.

2. Even in safe mode, with restore turned off, stinger stops running
when it gets to the MsnMusic.exe file, as described above. The
"scanning..." message remains, but nothing else happens. Viewing the
running processes in task manager, there is no indication of a problem
with stinger.

3. I also tried editing the list of what stinger scans - I pulled c:\
off the list and had it just scan the MsnMusic program file folder.
Same problem. So it's not like it's running out of memory. It's
getting stuck on that same file each time.

Again, I can't find anything online posted by anyone else having this
kind of a problem with stinger.
