In IE7 I have 'hardened' the Internet Security Settings considerably,
including disabling Active Scripting. Scripted websites which I absolutely
trust are added to Trusted sites. Among these are websites from highly
reputable financial institutions and Microsoft/Windows update sites.

This arrangement has been working for me just fine for a very long time.
However, recently some of these trusted websites do not open in the Trusted
zone anymore but instead trying to open in the Internet zone. Needless to
say that since Active Scripting is disabled in the Internet Zone the
websites won't open correctly.

I reset IE7 numerous times, always followed by enabling all (updated)
protections SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D have to offer. The problem did not
go away.

Well, I reset IE7 again but this time without utilizing either
Spywareblaster and Spybot S&D and was pleasantly surprised that the websites
I added to the Trusted zone do open in accordance with my original settings.

I tested this arrangement by applying the protection/immunization facilities
(one at the time) provided by SpywareBlaster/Spybot S&D and same problem
recurred. To be sure, I conducted this test three times with the same
results.

Based on this, I am pretty certain that the protection/immunization
facilities of both Spywareblaster and Spybot S&D are causing this
occurrence.

I posted a write-up with respect to the above to
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ and still awaiting a response.

In the meantime, could experts in this newsgroup please advise if it is
deemed to be essential utilizing applications such as Spywareblaster and/or
Spybot S&D for adding website to the Restricted zone?

What are the downsides for not using these services?

Are there other alternatives available?

TIA,
Charryl Chessman jr.

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the settings you select in any tab of IE
Tools > Internet Options from "sticking". These include but are not limited
to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer, SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Norton
AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and Zone Alarm (Free and
Pro).

Essential? Certainly not.

> What are the downsides for not using these services?

Being online with less of a safety net.

The downside of /using/ such applications is not being entirely familiar
with what they do, what they don't do, and how they do/don't do it. <eg>
IMHO Spybot should only be used by advanced users.

Apart from AOL's AVS, I use WindowsDefender, Ad-Aware (without Ad-Watch),
SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D (without Tea Timer), CWShredder. That's about it.
I rely on Windows FireWall and use SeconfigXP.
I am a careful surfer and practice safe-hex; And probably dump
SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D if my issue can not be resolved. I might try
SUPERAntiSpyware and/or Spyware Terminator.

Good to know.

I hope that my surfing habits together with AOL's AVS will take care of that
(time will tell).

As mentioned above, I use Spybot w/out the (troublesome) Tea Timer function.

Very happy to report that 'Javacool' of Wilders Security Forum has come up
with a fix. Also, it is suggested that there may be a bug in IE7 causing
this behaviour.

I'd like to know what irmworldwide.com.au (AKA RedSheriff, a known
troublemaker: http://cexx.org/sheriff.htm) has to do with the sites you
wanted to run in Trusted Sites zone? To wit:

http://*.guestmcleod.com.au
https://*.visiweb.com.au [is that even a valid domain?]
https://personal.macquarie.com.au

Furthermore:

I'd ask you why you feel the above three sites need to be in Trusted Sites
zone? Is the functionality of the three sites affected if they're running
in Internet zone? (Ditto for *.investingtimes.com.au.)

I don't like the looks of this DNS Report for visiweb.com =>
http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=visiweb.com

PS: Don't forget to post back to this thread:
