Because it wasn't written that way. It started out as a rough-and-ready
tool to kill spyware and although donations are gladly accepted, is
still free. Its user interface has come a long way since the first
versions. Like with many other programs, the user is assumed to be
responsible enough to check for updates. Don't wait to be spoonfed -
check for updates to your important programs on a regular basis.

Spoon fed? I don't think so. So what do *you* make of the explicit
message I quoted in my original post, under 1.3's Update tab?
"Use this option if you want to know if there is a new version of
SpyBot - Search Destroy, and what's new about it."

Do you ignore it and go onto the web site each week? For my part, I
assumed I could trust it. Just as I've trusted the program's
functionality for years. Should I now distrust it and start running
alternative spyware programs?

BTW, why are you so defensive? I happen to think Spybot is excellent,
and all the more so because its author has made it freely accessible.
But that doesn't mean it's *perfect*. Feedback on any flaws or quirks
(there are more I've posted about in 1.4 with TeaTimer, confirmed by
others) will however hopefully help nudge it that bit closer.

Sorry you misinterpreted my post like that. Since I fix computers for a
living and much of my work involves cleaning up badly infested Windows
machines - yes, I get/checkfor updates to all my malware-removal tools
very frequently. My clients and my family know to scan for malware once
a week with Spybot and Ad-aware, and they know to search for updates
from within the program before they scan. It is true that my family
relies on me to keep tabs on new versions of the maintenance programs
we use (after all, they have their own on-site tech support), but the
boys have been checking for updates/patches to their games and programs
*they* use since they were little.

I think the responsibility for checking for updates/patches should lie
with the user, just like it is a car owner's responsibility to keep
track of when the car needs to have regular service. If a program
automatically checks for updates when you run it (and if you allow it
through the firewall to do this), that's a nice touch. Feature requests
should be sent to the software maker.
