Sorry you misinterpreted my post like that. Since I fix computers for a
living and much of my work involves cleaning up badly infested Windows
machines - yes, I get/checkfor updates to all my malware-removal tools
very frequently. My clients and my family know to scan for malware once
a week with Spybot and Ad-aware, and they know to search for updates
from within the program before they scan. It is true that my family
relies on me to keep tabs on new versions of the maintenance programs
we use (after all, they have their own on-site tech support), but the
boys have been checking for updates/patches to their games and programs
*they* use since they were little.
I think the responsibility for checking for updates/patches should lie
with the user, just like it is a car owner's responsibility to keep
track of when the car needs to have regular service. If a program
automatically checks for updates when you run it (and if you allow it
through the firewall to do this), that's a nice touch. Feature requests
should be sent to the software maker.
