I use Spybot 1.3. I regularly run the Update facility, and assumed
that it would not only get new definitions but also advise me of any
new version, as this message clearly states:
"Use this option if you want to know if there is a new version of
SpyBot - Search Destroy, and what's new about it."
But I've just learned elsewhere that 1.4 is available. Not sure how
long ago it was released. Does anyone know why did 1.3 not inform me
of it automatically please?

Not sure what you're pointing me to? I already scanned the web site,
and found this in the FAQ:
"The integrated update is not working. Are there any solutions for
this?"
The main reason for this problem is that you need to use a proxy
server to access the internet. In that case, the proxy server is
already set up in your browser, where you can look up its settings and
enter them into Spybot-S&D.
In Mozilla, you can find the Proxy settings if you open the Edit menu,
choose Settings... at the bottom, and navigate to the section Advanced
- Proxies.
In Internet Explorer, see the Menu Extras - Internet options, go to
the tab Connections and click the Settings button at the bottom."
Is that what you meant? If so, I'm stuck, as
- I don't use a proxy as far as I know
- My browser is neither of those two mentioned. I use Firefox. But so
far I've been unable to find its proxy settings.

I think the point of the post by 'Tom Pepper Willett' is that you can
download version 1.4 from the URL. If version 1.3 is working for you, then
version 1.4 will work also, and use the same settings. No need to make it
more complicated than necessary, and find problems where none exist;
'integrated update' refers to DEFINITION update, not version upgrade.
SpyBot Search&Destroy is generally recognized as the best application of its
type, and the price performance ratio certainly can't be beat.

I had done that. I'm now running 1.4. However, my question wasn't
about where to get an upgrade - that's obvious - but about why it
wasn't automatic.

OK, thanks, understood. I mistakenly read 'integrated' as meaning
'both definitions and software'.

Why so defensive? My post wasn't an attempt to give a balanced review
of Spybot (FWIW, I think it's excellent overall), but to raise a
specific query about what looked (and still looks) like a minor flaw.
---------
So, anyone know the answer to my question please? Maybe it's just that
there *is* no automatic update of the software (at least in 1.3)?
