Fix Reported:

This was a seriously annoying (and clever) bug. It had the following
symptoms:
1) It disassociated almost all .exe files
2) It gutted and disabled Norton Anti-Virus 2005
3) It prevented the "uninstallation" of NAV 2005 (and therefore a new
clean version could not be installed)
4) It disabled Internet Explorer and Netscape (so that most web-based
scans could not be done). Thank goodness it didn't disable Firefox,
and we were able at least to communicated via Firefox.

To fix, we:
A) Used the Doug Knox file (see above) to re-associate most .exe files
B) Telephoned MS assistance, and re-registered IE (using a download
they recommended from www.geocities.com!)
C) Called Symantec; they sent via email a Norton Removal tool, we used
to delete the corrupted NAV 2005
D) Re-installed NAV 2005, updated it and ran scan; NAV 2005 found no
bugs
E) Downloaded and ran the AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT (per Dave's suggestion),
and the McAfee software found the Exploit ByteVerify trojan
F) Uninstalled NAV 2005, and installed and ran latest McAfee Anti-Virus

G) The McAfee Anti-Virus scan found and deleted the Exploit ByteVerify
trojan
H) We're running lavasoft, etc., to see what else we can find.

Two questions:
I) We found no bug other than that Exploit ByteVerify trojan, however,
based on the descriptions of its effects, it doesn't sound like it does
all the nasty things mentioned above - does anyone have any experience
with this trojan causing this type of damage?
II) Since we found no other bug, how high is the likelihood that
there's something bad still lurking ...

Thanks again to all who offered assistance!
