My computer is new and I have antivirus, firewall, etc. software.
Occasionally, while surfing on Internet Explorer, a window pops up which says
it's Explorer and says: Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. Then I have the
option of sending an error report or not or selecting "debug." I sent the
error report once. I probably should have asked here first. Am I safe in
sending the error report? Is it real? Thanks.

Yes, it's a real message. Chances are, you're not updated. You'll want to
turn on automatic updates.

Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all of the updates
that it finds for your machine. You'll also see notes if you need to turn on
automatic updates on that page. It'll help you set it up.

After updating, hopefully you'll see a few less of these messages.

Just to add to the previous reply that error reporting system is improving
and if it is a known error you may get a reply to that effect.

Mostly however you won't, it will just go and that's all. It's not a
"Personal" message so there's no way for the system to reply to you since it
does not know who you are, but the reporting system can find info on known
errors if there is any available.
