I think the following happened: In May of this year, another creative hacker
managed to mimic Microsoft's monthly security bulletin announcement and issue
a counterfeit version. In this case, the fake email was distributed under the
guise of a Microsoft Security Advisory claiming to have an official update to
Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Outlook. But rather than patch
vulnerabilities in these programs, the fraudulent update infected unwary
users with a virus.

Nothing on the desktop works. Tried to use the boot disk; there, the Norton
Antivirus check never finished; don't know if reloading CMOS info is ok; it
says Boot records are good; don't know if reloading Partition tables is ok.
My last option (and I am about to do it) is reformatting the hard drive. Any
suggestions?

Try getting into safe mode without networking first. Then scan if possible.

Thanks Galen,

I got into the SAFE Mode, but now my Modem doesn't work. Something could
have changed in the setup. It looks like BestBuy or some other shop will have
to check this out.
Thanks anyway for your prompt help.

Your modem will not work in safe mode without networking. I was (mistakenly
it seems) under the impression that you were on that PC when you posted
this. Try a restore point with safe mode. If it works then you should do the
cleaning as described in the earlier post/site. If not then you can do a
repair installation of Windows. "Reloading the CMOS info..." Probably
nothing there would help.

For a clean installation just pop the CD into the tray, make sure it's set
to boot to CD, reboot, and follow the directions.

For a repair installation:

How to perform an inplace upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

You can download the programs mentioned in the earlier post and burn them to
CD on another computer, install them on the non functioning computer in safe
mode and scan. The downloads should contain reasonably updated definitions
already. That would be the route that I'd try first.

Galen,

I got everything working. Thank you so much. I learned a lot in the process.
Thanks for boosting my confidence.
