I have an old Compaq home pc which is infected with spyware, cookies,
homepage hijackers etc.
There is currently no software installed on the pc to enable the effective
removal of these damaging items.
Everytime the pc is booted up I am unable to use it.
Is it possible to remove these items and how do I go about it?

Here are general malware removal steps. You will need to get the tools
and updates from a known-clean computer with an Internet connection and
either a cd burner or have a usb thumbdrive with enough capacity to
transfer the files. Do everything in Safe Mode. If you can't even use
the computer in Safe Mode, then the only way to clean it would be
outside Windows with either a Bart's PE or something like ERD Commander
(very expensive). In that case unless you have a high level of computer
skills, you would be better off just formatting the computer and doing
a clean install.

I find Kaspersky is excellent at removing malware of almost every kind
including cookies and hijackers. There is a tool available from our
website called Multi AV. It gives you the option of using multiple
scanning engines. Kaspersky and McAfee would be the most thorough ones
available there. You could also consider KASFX also available from the
same page.

There is a typo here. I meant to say 'spyware and hijackers' NOT
'cookies' which are a threat dealt with by ad-aware or spybot.

or cookies are threats dealt from every user who just Open Control
Panel-Internet Options and delete them because they are unnecessary.
