If your computer has Windows XP Service Pack 2:

1. Open a command prompt window (Start > Run > cmd).

2. Type this line and press enter:

netsh winsock reset catalog

3. Reboot.

If your computer has an earlier version of Windows XP, download
LSP-Fix on another computer and run it on yours:

Hehe. I remember when I used to have to registry hack that by deleting
the winsock and winsock2 entries in HKLM\System\Current Control
Set\Services, delete the TCP/IP connection protocals on LAN, and then
reinstall from windows\inf (just in case someone might want/need to
repair the Winsocket manaully). Those were the days.

If you can ping sites from DOS but IE doesn't load internet site then it
sounds like your winsock has corrupted. Try download a program called
winsockfix from other computer and then run it on the faulty one.

Or, if you're accessing from a public computer and can't download the
proggie, than go to start-->run regedit. Delete Winsock and Winsock2
from HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services. Then go to Control Panal
(switch Control Panal to Classic View if you're not in it already),
Network Connections, and right click on your local area network
connection you connect to the internet from. Uninstall the TCP/IP
protocal. Then click on install, click on protocal and click add, then
click on have disk. Type in the path c:\%windir%\inf (usually %windir%
is windows). Select the TCP/IP protocal and install. Reboot and you
should be ready to go. Good luck.
