Hi - hate to direct you to yet another group, but if you're having problems
with Windows Update, you should post in microsoft.public.windowsupdate for
help troubleshooting it. This doesn't seem to be virus related.

I presume you've already made sure your account has admin rights....Best of
luck.

OK - thanks. I posted as you suggested. I am getting confused over Windows
Update and now the new Microsoft Update. I thinking that since W2K support
is being downgraded, neither update system will be available for W2K?

Support for W2k is still in effect, and I believe MU works for W2k.
Good luck with your question.

From : http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy

" Business and Development software ( Win2K )
Security updates will be available through the end of the extended support
phase (five years mainstream phase plus five years extended support phase) at
no additional cost for most products. Security updates will be posted on the
Windows Update Web site during the mainstream support phase, and during the
first two years of extended support. In the final three years of the extended
support period, Microsoft will continue to post important and critical
security updates on the Microsoft Download Center Web site. "

Since Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 was released on 26-Jun-2003
" Support ends either 12 months after the next service pack releases or at
the end of the product's support lifecycle, whichever comes first. Visit the
Lifecycle page to find the support timelines for your particular product. "
Visiting the Lifecycle page reveals :
" Microsoft will offer a minimum of 10 years support (5 years of Mainstream
support and 5 years of Extended) for Business and Developer products. "

So, let's see if we can get this straight. Since Win2K was released in 2000,
the mainstream support for SP4 will last at least until 12 months after the
release of SP5, if there is one, and updates for it will be available on
Windows/Microsoft Update until 2007. Thereafter for the next 3 years, from
the Microsoft Download Center.
Hope that's right ;)
