I have an old unused laptop that I am setting up as backup to do trivial
tasks on the 'net. It is a Win98 rig with nothing on it but the OS.

I would like to get AVG or AVAST on the computer, but would like to know if
I can d/load the software to a folder on my desktop PC, copy the contents of
the folder to a useable CD and install that way. In that the programs are
free, there is no legal issue is there? I haven't used either of these free
A/V's before so I am not familiar with them. Are they self-extracting or do
I need a WinZip-type program before I get started.

I know you shouldn't have two A/V's running on the same PC, but downloading
to a folder shouldn't cause a problemon my desktop, should it?

I don't want to risk attempting to getting online with absolutely no
protection even with the crappy old laptop, you know. Thanks a lot.

D.

Yes, you can download Avast from
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html for free. It is a single
setup.exe, and yes, you can burn it on the cd and install that way.
Regarding legal issues - visit the avast web site. As far as I know if you
intend to use home edition on your home PC, avast is free of charge and only
thing it requires is registration, once per year. I have been using Avast
for more than two years (or so) and I am very, very satisfied.
I have never used AVG, so I can not say anything about it.

It would be just fine since it's for free ( an option for you to install it
so long you dont tweak the application ) it wouldn't use zip apps its just
self extracting exe file independently. Just proceed with default /
recommended setup and that would work.

If your Windows 98 has NO internet connection ,download Avast
http://www.avast.com

install the Setup file ,it is simple.

Then goto Avast's page and visit the registration page and fill in the info
and you'll receive the reg key on your email.

Then open Avast and you'll be asked to enter the reg key so do it. It is
free ,as you know.

Then ,if your Windows 98 has internet connection ,update Avast using the
intergrated module .
If your Windows 98 has NO i-net connection ,visit Avast's page ->
Download->Updates and choose version 4 and then version version 4.6 and
download the ExE file which includes the definitions so copy the to your
WIndows 98 and install them just clicking on the file.
