I was trying to install Trend Micro PC-cillin 2005 and was given the choice to
let it
uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2003 or cancel the installation. I cancelled, but
I'd like
to know if anyone knows a way to get around this.

You can't and should not !

Only "ONE" fully installed anti virus application should be installed.

you must choose which one you want.

What's the reason for this? It means that if I want to try out different Anti
Virus
programs I have to uninstall each one before I can try the other...has this
always been
the case? Is it true with all Anti-virus programs?

This has always been the case with all full-featured antivirus programs, at
least within the last few years. I can't speak for the issue under Win9x/ME
because I don't remember. Most antivirus programs will run kernel-level
services and you will get conflicts and problems if you try and run two at
once. Besides, there is no need to run two at once.

So yes, if you want to try out different av's, you'll need to install them
one at a time, uninstalling the previous one before you install the next
one.

Conflicts.

Anti virus software has two basic modes of operation "On Demand" and "On Access".
"On Access" scanning is performed every time a file is writtem or read from
media. It also
can be when email is sent or received.
"On Demand" scanning is telling the software to scan a portion of media or the
entire media
or all media.

Having two fully installed anti virus products may/will conflict. You can't
have two anti
virus products performing "On Access" scanning at the same time. The idea of
having two
fully installed anti virus products is just plain contraindicated.

Now that does NOT mean you can have one fuully installed anti virus product
installed
performing both "On DFemand" and "On Access" scanning having additional "On
Demand" anti
virus scanners. This could relate to a GUI based "On Demand" scanner such as
the Free
BitDefender 8, web site scanners like Trend Micro's Housecall and Freedom AV
scanner OnLine
or even my Multi AV Scanning tool wich is a front-end to 4 different command
line anti virus
scanners from; McAfee, Sophos, Trend Micro and Kaspersky.
