I have been having problems with my laptop. It shuts off during a virus
scan. After reading various post I have, a gut feeling it has something
to do with LSASS.EXE,CSRSS.EXE, AND SMSS.EXE. They seem to run a lot in
task manager. I tried to end the process and delete the files buy XP
woould not let me.
I have tried a bunch of things:
I used the Norton one time tools with not results.
I used the Norton online scan, no results.
I used the Microsoft tool with no reuslts.
I ran my adware program, didn;t seem to help.
I checked my registries, using a MS spec sheet, no issues.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Fred

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe
It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } three batch files, five Kixtart
scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, a PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE.
It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend and McAfee Anti Virus Command Line
Scanners to
remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.
C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal
Mode. This
way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor’s web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Exit the menu and Reboot the PC.
You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you
can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded
the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode
[F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run
in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.
When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive
PDF help
file.
To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go
through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.
* * * Please report back your results * * *

Well... I tried the batch file that you refered me to. And I had the
same results .crash during virus scan. I noticed it happens at the end
of the scan, when is looking at the Windows files. Also, it only
happend on the Mcafee and Sophos scans. The Trend scan worked fine and
found no virus'. Also the adware scan stopped one out of the three
times I used it. I tried the virus scans in both safe and normal
modes, same results.
Thanks,
Fred

Open a Command Prompt.
In the Command Prompt type the following...
CHKDSK C: /F
If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts?
(Y/N)"
Choose - Y
type; EXIT
Reboot the PC.
A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.
When it reboots, perform a defragmentation of the hard disk.
You can get to the Defragmenting program easily by executing; dfrg.msc
Start --> run ->
type; dfrg.msc

David,
I did a check disk and a defrag, then ran my AV and adware and they ran
fine, my sybot crashed. So I ran AV angain and it crashed the PC in the
Windows Syetem32 subfolder, it was towards the end of the folder . So I
did a selctive scan and the same thing happened, crashed towards the
end of the System32 folder, in the w's.
All AV's were run in normal mode and then safe mode, same results..
Thanks,
Fred
