My NAV (home for XP Pro)license expired about a month ago. I don't really
mind, since I use it primarily for making sure doc files aren't infected,
and I don't get many doc files. Nevertheless, I'd like some protection from
viruses; other than a firewall. When I updated NAV last year from the
previous version, I just went down to Staples and bought a copy thinking it
would be a clean install. Well, it was except for one thing. After applying
it, NAV wanted to go off to the internet and pulldown all sorts of new
things. Since I'm working a 30K baud, that wasn't a happy experience. The
box version really didn't do me any good. I can get to the internet via
broadband if I take my laptop there.

Any suggestions on how to proceed without spending a lot of unnecessary time
or money on this?

A firewall has nothing to do with Antivirus software, so, you are not
protected against malware if you have a firewall.

I don't know of any antivirus software that comes on media that contains
current protection updates, they all require a connection and lots of
file size to get you fully protected.

If you and get to BB speed this is painless, if not, I don't see that
you have much choice, you will have to just start it and let it run
overnight.
