NAV and always showed around 160,000 files scanned.
The Consumer Associates EZ Antivirus "counter" shows only 80,000 files
scanned (though it takes about the same amount of time, 20 minutes). The
only option it offers is to select certain folders not to be scanned.
Does this mean that it is not scanning ALL files? Is this difference
"normal" among different AV programs?

I already gave you your answer. I just pointed out where the best place to ask
such
questions for future reference.

Well, David, this is the place you directed me to.
I guess I'd still like to be reassured that all the files on my computer
have been scanned, even though the numbers indicated in their counters may
differ.

As I recall, in addition to pointing you here, he also answered your
question in his previous reply.

How many files an antivirus scans depends on its settings or the
program. Some programs shows for scanned all files including archives or
executable files and so on.Some antivirus softwares shows for scanned the
whole file only.For example:
Panda scans all files .Imagine we have an archive containg another 10
files.Panda will scan the whole archive and will shows you it has scanned 10
files.
F-prot will scan the whole archive but will show you it scanned 1 file only
because the archive is only 1 file no matter it contains 10 other files.See!
