I'm just installed a fresh WinXP PRO system onto my laptop and installed the
following free apps - Comodo Firewall Pro, AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus and Spybot
Search & Destroy v1.5.2.
Do I need to install anything else or are all my bases loaded?
PS: Its been a while since I've installed Windows on a PC, been on linux for
2 yrs, but my wifi module just won't work under linux, but will under
WinXP????

Hi Gerry,
At least in my neck of the woods, the basic workstation security
requirements are usually stated as a triad:
- an automatically updated virus scanner that is always on
- firewall software
- keeping the operating system, as well as all applications, up to date;
automatically, if possible
I often add safe usage habits as a fourth point (because no virus scanner
can protect a system from a reckless administrator). Email encryption
could be a fifth, keeping in mind that plain-text email messages are about
as secure as post cards written with a pencil.
Extending encryption to the file system might also be a good idea,
especially in laptops that are susceptible to theft. Making frequent
backups, some of which should be stored (securely) off-site, is also
important.

The most dependable defenses are:
1.Do not work as Administrator; For day-to-day work routinely use a Limited
User Account (LUA).
2.Secure (Harden) your operating system.
3.Keep your operating(OS) system (and all software on it) updated/patched.
4.Reconsider the usage of IE and OE.
5.Review your installed 3rd party software applications/utilities; Remove
clutter.
6.Don't expose services to public networks.
7.Activate the build-in firewall and configure Windows not to use TCP/IP as
transport protocol for NetBIOS, SMB and RPC, thus leaving TCP/UDP ports
135,137-139 and 445 (the most exploited Windows networking weak point)
closed.
7a.If on high-speed internet use a router as well.
8.Routinely practice Safe-Hex.
9.Regularly back-up data/files.
10.Familiarize yourself with crash recovery tools and re-installing your
OS.
11.Utilize a real-time anti-virus application and vital system monitoring
utilities/applications.
12.Keep abreast of the latest developments; Shit happens...you know.
The least preferred defenses are:
Myriads of popular anti-whatever applications and staying ignorant.
