Hello,

I do work for a small firm with about 8 computers and 1 file server. They
are configured as a workgroup (XP and W2003).......They connect to the
Internet through a LinkSys router and to each other by a LinkSys switch.

For about 2 months now, about every 6 days, very close to 5:00 PM all
machines show that their network connections is down (cable unplugged). In
the past I have shut down all machines, switches, and routers and then
restarted everything. Normally for the next few hours the network will go
down again.......

If I wait until the next day, I can unplug all devices from the switch,
start the switch and reconnect all machines and everything will work fine
until another 6 days go by..

I have replaced all switches and the firewall with new ones and have run
complete virus scans of all machines without uncovering anything (they are
running Mcafee).

Anything else I could check? I'm guessing a worm/virus?

Thanks!

It could be that your computers are trying to renew their IP leases at the
same time. I've never heard of it bringing down a network, but given how
inexpensive switches are nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the
case.

Hi John,

Thanks for responding.......

I looked at that early on too. I even changed the lease duration to a few
months......I then changed out both the switch and configured a new router.
Same deal: about 6 days later network crashed......Also, nothing in any of
the event logs, firewall logs, etc.........

I doubt this is viral in nature.

Look at environmental conditions such as power as the source.

This is the most likely cause. Putting a packet sniffer on the network
where it can see all traffic might help if it is not. I would recommend
that he use APC SmartUPS line on all the network equipment. Remember all
UPSes are rated in VA and not watts, but the box or fine details should give
the wattage. For switches I would get a large enough UPS so that it can
continue to run for a least an hour with power out. The SmartUPS line from
APC will do power analysis and conditioning to keep the power clean and a
connected computer can see the voltage drops and spikes that it corrects.
