When I open up IE6 I get multiple copies and I can't access the site I wish.

What is the virus/malware status of the computer? Make sure it is clean:

I don't know.

I gave up Norton as it was a pain, and instead I use MS Firewall and MS
Windows Defender, and it has not detected any virus. I also used the Trend
Housecall Site and it also found nothing.

But I can use IE to log on to my Home ISP but if I then try to go elsewhere
(from Favourites, History etc) I get multiple IEs with nothing on them and
they keep regenerating themselves as well.

Then please go through the virus/malware removal steps at the link I
gave you. I would include scanning with a first-line antivirus tool
such as Sysclean or David Lipman's Multi_AV also. Links and
instructions are at the website. Here is the main section again for
your convenience:

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

MS Firewall and Windows Defender are not anti-virus programs.
