Following the advice I read about here on this newsgroup last night I
updated my Java on my laptop to the latest update (9) and then this morning
was
doing my monthly cleanup. Adware, Virus Scan, Spybot, CCleaner, ChkDsk,
and Defrag. Anyway, during the checkdisk it got hung up and kept starting
over and wouldn't go ahead and boot XP. At one of the restarts of
checkdisk, I hit escape, and it starting scrolling very fast something about
not enough space to do something with a bad sector, it wouldn't stop, so I
just turned it off at power button. When I turned it back on it started the
checkdisk again. I stopped it and turned it off again. I restarted in safe
mode, it went as far as the black screen with all the lines of text and
hung. I finally got it restarted in safe mode and clicked on restart with
last good configuration. It booted without a problem. Needless to say, I
never did try to defrag. My question is could it have something to do with
the Java? That is the only thing that has changed on the computer, I ended
up uninstalling it entirely. Another question, what is Java used for
anyway? Does a person really need it?
I hope it is not my hard drive going belly up. I have only had this laptop
about 8 months. Compaq Presario, Windows XP SP2, AMD Turion 64, AVG
anti-virus, Zone Alarms Firewall. I have a wireless router. I apologize
for the lengthy/wordy message. Any suggestions as to what the problem might
be?

Learn a lesson, before you install a unknon program, do a search with Google.
Run CHKDSK /R
http://home.tiscali.de/zdata/hdcleaner_e.htm Read Review at MajorGeeks
http://download.betanews.com/download/1131569373-2/Dial-a-fix-full.exe Do a scan with all the check marks on.
Please take some time and read Windows Internals, Troubleshooting, and this
page http://wiki.djlizard.net/Special:Allpages
Good luck

If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options Java came installed on my computer and I read on here that if you had an
earlier version than update 9 you needed to update, which is what I did. I
have since uninstalled it. Thanks for your help.

Unrelated to Java. Perform the CHKDSK that Engel suggested.

This is probably not even the proper newsgroup to be posting all this,
except this is where I found the advice about updating Java if you had an
earlier version. Java came installed on both my desktop and my laptop. I
googled Java and read it, but I still don't understand any better than the
last time I read it exactly what it is used for. Oh well, I have
uninstalled it on this computer so doesn't matter.
I ran the CHKDSK /R as suggested. It ran through Chkdsk just as it did the
other morning and when it finished with the Chkdsk I got this blue screen
with a full page message, but it flashed so quick I couldn't read any of it.
It then went to the black screen with the option of safe mode, etc. I chose
last known good configuration and it finished booting. I shut it down and
then restarted and it restarted normally. Seems that there is something
corrupt with the boot up after running Chkdsk or something. I have never
experienced this problem before. Any ideas?
I went to HP website and ran all the hardware diagnostics and everything
tested OK.
Thanks for your help.
