Hi Panda_man

I updated to the latest version of java and decided to remove previous
updates.
I checked the the website about removing previous udates.

Can I remove older versions of the JRE after installing a newer version?

The latest version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) contains updates to
previous versions. There might be some applications or applets written and
tested against a specific version of the JRE.

It is recommended that you keep older versions of the JRE on your system. If
you are running low on disk space, you can uninstall older versions of the
JRE.

To remove older versions of JRE, go to Windows Java Runtime Environment
uninstallation instructions page.

I deceided to go ahead and remove both previous updates not because of low
disk space. When i removed the older versions I had something like 165
registry errors and windows just crashed, brought up active desktop on my
screen. I can't even open java now - IE. has encountered an error and has to
close.)

Yes, you can, and probably should, as the newer version wouldn't have
been released if it wasn't intended to fix something. In fact, some of
the earlier JRE versions, such as the infamous 1.4.x version, contained
widely exploited vulnerabilities.

And do you have a special, customized applications (or visit such
web-sites) that rely upon the older versions? If not, lose the older stuff.

At this point, you'll probably need to remove all versions of the JRE,
clean the registry of all references to them, and then reinstall only
the most recent version of the JRE.

Yes. If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0
update 5,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to JRE/JSE
Version 5.0 update 5. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively
being
exploited. That means if you have a vulnerable versions you can be infected
with malware
extremely easily.

Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of Sun
Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed ASAP. Older versions should be
removed FIRST
prior to installing the latest version.

The latest version is Sun Java JRE/JSE Version 5.0 Update 8

Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version.

Such as...
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08

Thanks, for the heads-up guys;

When i removed the old versions, I did it through the add and remove
programs. I then removed all entries for, 5.0 Update 5 and 5.0 Update 6, from
the registry and program files, I did not think to search for older versions,
but i will, this is when windows crashed.

I went to java website to downlolad the latest version, but this is the
latest version to download - Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6.
When i clicked on the link to download now windows crashed again and asked me
if i wanted to report the error, which i said no because they don't know what
caused the error in the first place. Java, advises to download latest version
which they say is 6. and when i do that windows crashes.

If the older versions can be exploited, why does java say to keep older
version other than some programs may not work if you uninstall previous
versions. Where do I downlolad the latest updated version for java, do i have
to manualy download.

Windows Online Installation: Typical download size is 7.1 MB, which is the
minimum download. The size may increase if additional features are selected,
but their are no version numbers. I should point out that when i went to
verifiy installation it failed in the message java said i was running the
latest version and then windows Crashed..

No one suggested the following...
"... I then removed all entries for, 5.0 Update 5 and 5.0 Update 6, from the
registry and
program files,"

I fear you tweak the OS too much an thus cause the crashes. All we have
suggested is to
remove all older version via the Control anel applet "Add/Remove Programs" prior
to
installing the latest version.

If you go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp you will find
version 5 update
8. Donload the FULL install version not the online installation version.
