I always auto-updated in the past then used add-remove to remove the old
version.

Stephen: Sun/Java web sites can be confusing. Some time ago, they actually
had the latest verion of update 7 on the consumer page. Then, it
mysteriously disappeared a few days later, and then reverted it to Update 6.

I don't know what the heck they're doing.

Over at BleepingComputer, I noticed they withdrew R5U7 a few weeks ago
so I started a thread over there and we've had a rather interesting
discussion over there. One of the members emailed Java asking what's up
with R5U7 and Java said (in condensed form) there were issues with some
installations, so they withdrew it. For some reason, I have my doubts
about installations being the only problems...

Which would be a good reason for v5 update 8.

So far in the installations I have had v5 update 7 there have been no problems.

I have had no problems with 7 or 8 on any computers I am responsible for.
And, no issues with IE, FF, NS.
