Pardon me but none of this is right.

Update 8 _ONLY_ applies if you wish to install the JDK.
If all your doing is just browsing the Internet, no Java development, then
what is on offer is 1.5.0.6, and that is it.

You will see this:
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications

With a download button that takes you to *this* page:

https://sdlc1b.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=5849C8E6B7AFD75E01389839E1B4FF81

Which gives you the download for:

Windows Platform - J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8

Offline: jre-1_5_0_08-windows-i586-p.exe
Online: jre-1_5_0_08-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe

Thus, the JRE is available separately from the JDK.
