If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options

Didn't clarify that either, or any of the other caveats. Where do
your patches come from, if not from connecting to the 'net in an
unpatched state?

Which part of "applying a packet filter, a router, a FW device or
shutting down the network services is nescessary before connecting to
the net" did you not understand?

After having that in place you are safe to go update your software.
