Hello All,
Forget going after the Spammer who sent the Spam, it's a waste of time!
Think of it as throwing a Lead Life Preserver to a Drowning Man !!!!!!
There has only been Limited Success using Black Lists alone and
Filtering is just Burying you Head in the Sand hoping it will go away
!!!!!!!!
1. They are most likely using a Free or Trial ISP Account or Free Email
Account and they can make more of those in a day than you can close in a
week !
2. They could be hiding behind FREE Proxy Servers, Zombies, or Spoofed
IP's so that IP in the Email's Header is as USELESS as the Forged Email
Address in the From Field !
3. The Spams they already sent to other Victims on the ISP and Email
Accounts you just had Pulled are all still good because the Web Links in
them are still good, so the Spammers still gets PAID !
4. And so are the Millions of other Spams that were NEVER SENT TO YOU by
other Spammers with the same Web Links in them !!!
And the List goes on and on and on......
******************************
So what can you do that will have any effect ????????
First ask yourself who Benefits from the Spam and Pays the Spammer's to
Spam in the first place ??????
Go after the MONEY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
The Spammers are PAID AGENTS of the Web Sites and that Violates the Web
Hosts TOS as well as the Host of the Web Host !!!
The Web Site Owners PAY for their Web Sites/Domains and are harder to
Matain and Replace than the Spammer's ISP and Email Accounts !!!
If you run into a Web Host that supports Spamming, then go to the Host
of that Web Host !!!
Example:
If the Web Host is say, MSN.com and they support Spamming, then you go
to MSN's Host for that IP Block which would be UU.net to have UU.net
Enforce their TOS on MSN !!!
The Web Host doesn't want their IP Blocks Pulled or Blocked by their own
Host so you'll see action right away !!!
Now MSN does not support Spamming, but I think you get the Idea with the
above example.
REVENGE IS SWEET AIN'T IT !!!!!!
How do the Web Sites make Money $$$$$
They make Money on the Number of Hits the Site Generates, the Sales they
make or in Memberships they Sell, ect...
To increase the number of People coming to their Sites, most Advertise
in Legal ways like Opt In Lists, but others use Spamming or Hire
Companies that Spam.
To be fair here I must say that since most people don't go after the Web
Sites as I do.
I have found there are some Web Sites listed in Spams that don't know
they are supporting the Spammers let alone that they are a Source of
Spam themselves for Hiring Emarketers that Spam.
But it is the Web Site's responsibility to check this out before they do
hire them.
I have seen in NewsGroups where someone comes in and complains his Sites
were Pulled for Spamming only to find out the Company they Hired uses
Spamming instead of "Opt In Lists" because they didn't check them out
before hand.
How do the Web Sites know which Hits and or Sales to Pay the Spammer for
and which one not to Pay them for ?
There is more to those Web Links than meets the eye ! Literally !!!!
In the Link can be your Email Address that is sent to the Web Site when
you Click on the Link in the Spam and each Spammer may be assigned
different Email Lists.
They also now know it's a LIVE EMAIL ADDRESS that they can SELL it to
other Spammers too !!!
Ever see those Spams for Emarketing that Sell CD's full of Email
Addresses to Spam with ???
Now you know it's not just Spam Bots sucking up Email Addresses from Web
Pages, Newsgroups, Chat Rooms, or Game Servers that you Click Yes or No
to receive AD's from them and the Others they also ask if you want AD's
from who's Products or whatever are on the same Theme.
In other words an Opt in List for AD's from the Others you may or may
not know because they might not be listed on the Site when you checked
Yes or No should be a Red Flag to you.
And then there are the Sites that Spam you even when you tell them you
do not want to receive AD's from them but do anyway that also Sell your
Address to the Others !!!!!
There may also be a Code in that Link as well that tells the Site which
Spam Generated that Hit or Sale so they know which Spammer sent it and
who to Pay !
They may have several Web Pages and or Redirect Sites of the same page
but with different Addresses assigned to each Spammer that the Refer in
your Browser will tell them which Site you came from to reach their Site
and again which Spammer to Pay.
This list can go on and on and on as well.
*******************************
The Point is, the ONLY effective way to stop Spam is at it's Source, the
Web Sites, because they are the one's Paying for the Spam you are
receiving !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Without the Web Sites Paying for the Spam, the Spam problem would dry up
to next to nothing and what would be left can then be effectively
handled by Black Lists.
Hope you found this information helpful.

Not in the slightest. You've written a combination of things that have been
postualted in the past, some of which are already accepted wisdom and some
of which are abject nonsense. I will say this though: you've managed to
produce one of the most difficult to read articles that I've ever read.

I would say the folks over at news.admin.net-abuse.email would be more
interested in this than a group for disucssing viruses.

Hi Brian,
True, I didn't know that.
I looked for a Spam Group but didn't see one and missed the abuse-email.
Thank you for that info.
It still should have some interest here for Spams that download Viruses
from Web Sites through Cookies, Images ect... for those using OE or
other Email Clients in HTML instead of Text.
Closing the Web Site stops the Spread of those Nasty's too.
