I have a number of weird problems on my home computer, and can't access any
online technical help. I hope someone here can help, or direct me to the
right place.
About a month ago, Dell automatic updates installed some kind of fancy "Dell
Update Center" and caused a bunch of problems. I followed the instructions
they recommended for windows & security updates, and it screwed everything
up. For example, my computer was starting up in battery save (black screen)
- and it's not a laptop. I did a system restore to two weeks prior, and
removed whatever they did - fixed those problems, but may have caused these
others.
Several days ago, McAfee Security Suite suddenly disappeared, except for the
firewall. I have the complete set: antivirus, firewall, antispyware, &
privacy protection, all with automatic updates, subscription thru 7/06. The
software looks like it's still there, but when I try to run it, nothing
happens. I get a McAfee error message at startup. I've tried to re-download
the software from McAfee.com, but can't download anything - I get a blank
window, that says "done" in the lower left corner. I am unable to download
any virus updates, or do online virus scans. I've tried to run virus scans
from my installed software, and nothing happens. Same problem on
Microsoft.com. Also, Java applets don't run. Can open old emails, but get
"operation failed" when I try to get my new emails. Can't delete emails.
System Restore no longer functions. The Start bar at the bottom of the screen
no longer includes icons for open windows and documents. Norton virusscan
won't run, either. Sometimes, i can't access the internet at all, other times
(when I shut off the power and restart) I can get in, but none of the sites
work right. I can't access online technical help - those windows won't open.
Sorry for the long post. Any ideas? I'm up a creek.

Start by uninstalling the Dell Update Center. What happens when you do
this?

If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options When i did a System Restore at the time, it removed whatever weird software
Dell had put in, which seemed to conflict with Windows updates. Then, i
didn't have problems for about a month. Until now. :-|

Try the following, it may be your paddle.
Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe
It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } three batch files, five Kixtart
scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, this PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and
WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend and McAfee Anti Virus Command Line
Scanners to
remove
viruses and various other malware.
C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal
Mode. This
way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor’s web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Exit the menu and Reboot the PC.
You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you
can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded
the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode
[F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run
in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.
When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive
PDF help
file.
To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE and/or
FTP.EXE to go
through your FireWall to allow them to download the needed AV vendor related
files.
