I recently watched a prog on local TV about hackers and viruses and "how
they are connected".

I can remember my days in high school, breaking the admin computers in order
to falsify grades and all, but I never once needed to infect a computer with
viruses. Likewise, the "MyDoom" scare back a year+ ago, was traced to a pair
of software engineers, I believe. I was, admittedly, distracted at the time.

The "well-informed" personality more or less laid the entire blame for
viruses onto hackers. Is this, in the honest opinions of this usenet
community, the truth? And why?

As for why I'm posting this here? This usenet deals with both hackers and
viruses in the form of countermeasures used against them. Know one's enemy,
and stuff like that.

It used to be a situation where virus writers (Vx'ers) did their stuff for
bragging rights
or for kicks and giggles. However while the script kiddie is still around,
there is a new
motive -- money.

Malware writers today see $$ in there sights and the objective is for monetary
gains. The
malware writers Today can often be traced to organized crime syndicates. You'll
find many
are sourced in Russia. Some are based in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, NY (aka;
litle Odessa).

I suggest taking the time to download and view the following 17MB PowerPoint
Slide

If you don't have the full PowerPoint application you can download the

Misinformation/misinformed, hackers tend not to use viruses. Script
kiddies on the
other hand...

More misinformation, they just dont know better and don't know the
difference between hackers, cracker, script kiddies, spammers, bored
wankers etc etc.

If that's the case you're in the wrong area. Head over to one of the alt
groups on your ISP newserver but even they're really quiet as they are
"monitered" as os irc. Basically google as always is your friend.

Virus authors program viruses for personal gain. You cracked your school's
computers for personal gain. Virus authors' actions compromise and/or
threaten the integrity, confidentiality and availability of other people's
private data and systems. Your actions compromised and/or threatened the
integrity, confidentiality and availability of other people's private data
and systems. I'm not really seeing why you see your action as in a
different moral category from the actions of virus authors.

Viruses are entirely the fault of virus authors. And virus authors are
crackers / hackers. I don't see the problem. I didn't see the show, but it
sounds to me like the show is saying that all virus authors are crackers /
hackers, not that all hackers are virus authors.

If they choose to use the word hacker instead of cracker, I don't see that
as a problem. The people insisting that "cracker" is the correct term are
in the minority, and when it comes to definitions of words in the vernacular
language, the majority wins. A small minority of elitists used to insist
that "ain't" isn't a real word, but now it's considered a word, because the
majority wins.
