I went to install AVG but the installer keeps quitting on me. Then I
tried Norton and a couple others, and the same thing happened. Then I
went online to seach for others and every time I went to the web site
of an antivirus company, my browser shut down. Then I went to search
for answers and every time I even type the word virus into my browser
it shuts down. Everything else on my computer seems to be working fine.
What is this virus I have that is causing all this mess and how do I
get rid of it?? I tried installing those programs in safe mode but it
wouldn't help me.

There is no way for us to know what virus you have. The inability to install
a full-featured antivirus and go to security websites is caused by many
different viruses.

You need to clean up the machine at least partially before you will be able
to install a full-featured antivirus. Do the preparatory work here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then scan first with Sysclean (information at first link below) or Dave
Lipman's Multi-AV (see second and third links below). Then get, install,
and update a full-featured av and do a thorough scan in Safe Mode.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#TrendMicros_Sysclean
http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm - how to use Dave Lipman's Multi-AV
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe - Multi-AV download
http://pcdid.com/Multi_AV.htm - additional Multi_AV instructions

Note that you will need to get all tools and updates from a different,
known-clean machine and either burn them to a cd-r or have a usb thumbdrive
with enough capacity to transfer the files.

Once you've done that, go through the rest of the malware removal steps from
the very first link, including scanning with AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly
Ewido - http://www.ewido.net/en/) and follow instructions to do all scans
in Safe Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). The only alternative to going
through the malware removal tediously and systematically, probably with
online help from an HJT forum, and taking the machine to a real
professional is to back up your data and do a clean install of Windows.
It's your call. Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at
removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested
that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all your data backed up
before you take the machine into a shop.

I'd just like to add that you might have to restart your computer in Safe
Mode With Networking by tapping F8 as it boots.

Then try installing anti-virus and following the previous directions.

This is not recommended for a computer that is already infected unless there
is really no other way to get the tools/updates necessary to clean the
machine. You don't want to put an infected machine on the Internet and/or
the local area network. And if the OP's machine is infected with one of the
many viruses that prevent installation of a full-featured antivirus and
doesn't allow getting to any security websites (as he says it is), Safe
Mode With Networking will not help. Even if the virus/malware isn't active
in Safe Mode With Networking (and it might be), the damage to the system
has already been done and there will be entries in the registry and hosts
file that will remain until the malware is removed.

One of the good things about this board is you sometimes get differing
opinions.

They can help you find a solution.

My post speaks for itself.
