FYI note

MS has added a handy guided help tool that will guide a pc user, in a =
step-by-step approach, in obtaining and running the Malicious Software =
Removal Tool. It is very simple to use and follow. There are no obscure =
command lines to type in.
Simply follow the onscreen directions. Guided Help will download the =
tool. All the choices will be presented to you. They are:

a) Quick scan. Scans areas most likely to contain malicious software.

b) Full scan. Scans the entire system.

c) Customized scan. Allows scanning a specific folder.

One downloads the guided help module. Saves it to disk. Then you run the =
saved exe file, which then opens a new window with guided help.

A results screen is displayed at program end.

The tool may be used on systems running Windows 2000, Win XP, and =
Windows Server 2003.

Keep in mind this tool only scans for a specified list of "malicious =
software". The list is contained in MS KB 890830.

This tool is not a substitute for full-blown antivirus or anti-malware =
programs.

I ran it a few days ago & let it run overnight. I found it very easy to =
use. =20

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830/

The article has the link to download the Guided Help module, as well as =
an FAQ, and the list of "nasties" it looks for. The list is typically =
updated each month.

Hi Maurice thanks for the heads up on this...

Nice looking tool but I have found a number of problems with it in my
initial testing:

1) It failed on one of my test PC's at the MSRT Welcome screen it just fails
to find the Next button!
2) It does not offer the Step-By-Step approach that is shown in the online
help, is there a switch? I am missing something?
3) As soon as the scan completes the Guided Help closes the one of the most
important parts of the tool...The RESULTS! This would be fine if the final
window reflected these results but it does not so you have to be watching
very closely or you will miss the outcome of the scan...this is just MAD.

I really like MSRT which really isn't that hard to run (even for my Granny!)
and even though this wrapper tool does look really cool, I can't help
wishing the extra effort had gone into extending the number of virus
patterns MSRT detects!
I'll keep testing to see if I can figure out what is causing the Helper to
fail, I'll post if I find it.

BB

PS On a side note it also fails on Vista, but I guess that is to be
expected!

Hello BB (Richard),

You stated "2) It does not offer the Step-By-Step approach that is shown =
in the online help, is there a switch? I am missing something?"

There are no switches that I noticed for the Guided Help. I'm going to =
run it again and recheck the results info.

You mean the following...

The utility is...
%windir%\system32\MRT.exe

Command line switches...

/? or /HELP = displays the command line switches
/Q = quiet
/N = detect only
/F = force extended scan
/F:Y = force extended scan and automatically clean infected files

The following is the resultant log file...

%windir%\Debug\mrt.log

Sorry David I should have been clearer, I was referring to the new Guided
Help wrapper app.

Thanks

Rich
