Hi ppl,,,,,,

I gotta know what the deal is with Defrag and its "files that will not
be moved".

I defragged 6 times just now, and in each case the usual 'white clusters
with the lil' red box in top right corner' was there....... except, each
time I
defragged, it would show a whole new different array of these clusters.
Just what the heck is it with this scenario?
Sometimes there is a huge block of them, and next time there maybe just
a few lines of them.......... Either they can be 'moved/defragged' or
they cant, which is it?

I'm not lame enough to believe this is virus/trojan/worm etc activity, but
then again, why would ms programmers program the defragger to state
that certain files will not be moved?
Also, if these clusters in question Cant be Removed, then what are they?

tia

Please forgive lousy etiquitte and lack of subject topic in my post, think
I was
just frustrated as I again watched it happen today and have never gotten
a satisfying answer from forums or n/g's as to 'why'.
Again, pls forgive my manners.

Some files cannot be defragmented, system files in use and the paging
file and the MFT usually cannot be defragged unless you use a
defragmenter that operates on start up.

What OS and file system is this? AFAIK, Defrag doesn't make anything
smaller, except perhaps for file system structures that may be purged
of redundant deleted entries.

I do KWYM; XP's map sometimes shows variance between the end of one
defrag and the start of another defrag done immediately afterwards.

Vista "solves" that problem by not offering a map :-(

There are a number of reasons why a file isn't moved by defrag. Sure,
files that are "in use" can't be moved, but Defrag may also elect not
to move files that are not in use, but have certain attribute flags
set. This is historical, and deference to some software copy
protection schemes that would drop a file, note the raw cluster
address of that file, and hatch a DoS payload if that changed.

Sorry I'm "late to thread" (this is only post in it that I can see)
