| David (or others),
|
| I downloaded the FREE ZoneAlarm (Firewall Protection) from that page,
| zlsSetup_60_667_000.exe. But after I installed it, it looks like a
| commercial version and I can only try for 15 days. It somehow becomes
| "ZoneAlarm Pro" (the title of the window when double click the icon).
| What did I do wrong to miss the non-Pro freeware version? Thanks.
|
| BTW, I'm very happy with it. I run Windows "Internet Connection
| Firewall" on XP SP1 (uninstalled SP2 due to performance problems). ZA
| vsmon doesn't use much CPU. (But I/O read bytes and write bytes per
| unit time are among the top of all processes. 33kb/sec for reads as I
| speak, still fairly low actually.)

It may be possible that it is moving away from the 'free' model. However, paid
or not it is
still suggested and good software.

A late update on my puzzle (i.e. downloaded "free" Zone Alarm becomes
Zone Alarm Pro when it's installed). After 15 days trial, when I launch
it again, it tells me Pro version expires and I need to downgrade it to
the free non-Pro version. That's exactly what I wanted so I selected
it.

Hi Catamount

I have a step-by-step guide for a free Antivirus and Anti-spyware setup on
my site at:

http://www.windowsdefender.com/bronze_protection.htm

This setup uses Avast!, Ad-Aware SE Personal, and Windows Firewall.

AVAST works well, as does As-Aware SE, but the free Zone
Alarm firewall is more functional than the Windows firewall
since it monitors in and outbound traffic and has a much
easier interface.
