Several days ago my desktop wallpaper was changed to a black background with
a warning that my computer was infected. It occurred when I went to a site
and all this stuff started to automatically download. My Norton AV kept
popping up and, I hope, blocking much of it. I also clicked cancel when a
dialogue box popped up showing the progress of a large download. It also
installed a little red exclamation point icon in my system tray. I
instinctively right-clicked it and an "uninstall" option appeared which I
selected and the icon has been gone ever since.

I have since read many forum/newsgroup posts on the internet stating users
with similar desktop wallpaper cannot change theirs back. I can. I just go
into the Control Panel | Display and change my wallpaper to a regular one.
Does that mean my computer is reasonably ok to use as usual or is there
anything I still need to worry about?

I'm really not convinced your computer is clean. Go through the
Smitfraud removal steps here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Smitfraud_Trojan

Do all the preparatory work and run through at least some of the other
general malware removal steps listed here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then you'll know your computer is clean.

Thank you. I will take a crack at it and report back.

We don't post links to bad url's here. Just do a search for Spyfalcon or
Winfixer or SpyAxe and install them and you'll be infected. Or Google
for "how to get infected by [insert-name]" or the like.
