My brother-in-law just got infested with the Contravirus.com. I've tried
using Spybot S&D and Avast to remove it--unsuccessfully.

Going to Google and searching the groups helped, but they were still a
little confusing. The recommendations there seemed to revolve around
manually deleting a list of files and using the program SmitFraudFix.exe.

Since this is such a nasty little virus that just keeps coming back and
back, I could use some feedback on the best way to remove it.

Thanks,
Dan

Always remember - only download files from Trusted Sites.

The following links will take you to vendors sites for Spy Ware / Ad
ware removal tools and also for Antivirus tools. After you install any
of these applications and update them, run them in SAFE MODE to allow
them to properly clean your system.

First, make sure that your Java is updated to the latest version:
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

These sites are for downloading Anti-Malware and Anti-Spyware tools, in
order that I would use them myself:

Dave Lipman's tools:
Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

You can proceed by removing the Contra virus folder itself on the Add/remove
Program ( do such in safe mode )
and go to C:\windows\system32 and remove and exe file named xxupdater.exe /
xxupdate.exe it cross reference it with the latest modified file and post
back anything near to such before removing it ( all files with the same date
could be a possible attribute )

by the way your contra virus added ad-protect toolbar

Hello Leythos,,,

I am following threads as I have only just found this group, plus I
needed a group to post a problem to of which is being dealt with in
another thread.

I am replying to you in particular to see if I can learn about java for my
own computer.
I did a clean install on mine (oem) with 98SE 3years ago, and I have
never dabbled in java at all;; including updating & etc.
I noticed that you made a point of telling the o/p to ensure his/her java
was updated, and I would like to understand a little more regarding this.
After doing a 'find' on my computer for java, I see it is in many areas.
Personally, my computer runs just fine, is there a reason that I should look
at the java area of my computer?
(sometimes, I think knowing too much about computers and their files can
breed trouble, but then again, trouble has apparently been my middle name
since birth if you ask my mum n' dad)

Thank you for any replies, and excuse my butting into someone elses thread

Like all applications installed on your computer Java has exploits, each
time they come out with a new version they do it because they found a
hole in their product - since web apps often make use of Java you want
to ensure that you have the most secure version. It's that simple.

The best bet is to completely uninstall any and all versions, download
and install the latest, then reboot. Uninstalling does not remove all
traces, but it should unregister all links.
