Computer continually re-boots ME 03-03-2007

Operating System "Windows XP"

In my neighbourhood there is a young boy (son of a lone parent), his mother
is not computer literate. The boy has been running his computer on line
without Virus protection. The boy's older friend recommended that Grisoft's
free version of AVG-Antivirus be installed on the machine. On the first
scan a number of viruses were found and the machine rebooted and now
continually reboots when Window's XP splash screen appears. It is not
possible to get into "Safe Mode", pressing F8 during the boot-up sequence
enables the "Options" screen to appear but when any of the options are
selected the computer shuts down and reboots. This problem only appeared
after the Anti-Virus programme was installed.

At this point I was asked "what could be done?", I am aware that the whole
system could be re-installed including reformatting the HD (using Windows XP
installation CD). However, I have been told there are photographs which the
boy would like to salvage. Is there any way this computer can now be
cleaned without re-installing the system data?

http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page - Use this to boot up and copy the files
you want to salvage to a CD or USB drive.

Unless your computer has an uncommon partition setup, your windows partition
should be either /dev/hda1 or /dev/sda1. The recovery CD should pick your
partitions up automatically and mount them for you.

Take out the HD and slave it to yours and copy the files he wants, then
reinstall it back and using a jump-drive, copy back his files once you've
reestablished the OS. - instead of "slaving", you could also just unhook
your CD drive and put his drive there to copy, saving you the trouble of
"jumpers".
