I have tried to install the free AVG virus program and it says it is out of
date. When I go to update, it says the program is damaged, to reinstall. I
have done this 3 times, to no avail. I went to griswold.com I believe it
was.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.
I have a pentium 4, 1 gb ram, windows xp and just uninstalled my Trend
Pc-cillin because it seems that avg is more popular according the the
newsgroups. Also, my windows security alert is in the lower right hand
corner saying I have no protection.
I don't know what to do here.
Appreciate any help.

Popularity is not an indicator of capability. Grisoft ( the maker of AVG
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1 ) can often fall behind other AV vendors in
producing
signatures. Trend Micro is fine software and it shouldn't be dismissed in a
"popularity"
contest. Do you think Grisoft AVG may be more popular becuase it is free ?

Unfortunately, Grisoft doesn't provide much support for the free version.

Does your AV solution have to be a freebie ? I would highly suggest Kaspersky
or NOD32.

If it has to be free...

AVAST -
http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1016.html - FREE

AntiVir -
http://www.free-av.com/ - FREE

A compramise...

CA eTrust -
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm - FREE for one year.
{ Free offer extended indefinitely }

I don't mind paying for a software program at all. I just haven't heard
anything about Trend on any of the newsgroups. Which one should I get?
Kasperky or NOD32. I want one that isn't a resource hog, one that is user
friendly and doesn't interfere with my surfing and internet work. I had
Norton and hated it, if that is of any help.
Thanks.

1st choice - Kaspersky
2cnd choice - NOD32

Some believe NOD32 is lighter on resources.
