My daughter's laptop computer has become infected with a virus that turns on
and off the computer. She talked to Gateway's retail tech support today,
and they thought it was the CSW virus. I have my doubts. I don't have the
laptop model, but it was bought at Best Buys for maybe $600. Supposedly it
had virus protection (McAffe), a firewall and spyware. Gateway/Best said it
would take 2 weeks to repair the problem.

Can anyone provide a more likely suspect virus from what I wrote above, or
is really likely CSW? I told her that it might be smart to just replace the
HD if it is as thoroughly infected as they told her. That might void the
warranty, but maybe it's worth it to get the computer back on its feet.
She's not too happy about having it out of service that long,

I also told her take it back to Best and demand her money back. It's
supposed to be protected from attack, but has failed. It also sound like the
Gateway retail support is poor. It was purchased 3-4 weeks ago, and
supposedly had some 2 week easy return policy.

First , how do you know it is a virus ???
CWS => Cool Web Search doesn't do such things .
What (if any) is finding the virus , name , path ......

When a computer randomly turns off and on without any notice , this can be
caused by a hardware failure , something in this comupter is not working
correctly . In such case we can't help in the newsgroup so somebody needs to
check this computer but 2 weeks waitng is too much , in my opinion .

If the computer is turning on and off with some kind of notice , then it can
be caused by a malware . You need to provide more information .

Virus turn on a computer ? No !

It is more like a Wake on Lan (WoL) condition or Magic Packet.
Nothing about what you posted sounds viral.

Perhaps a "Cool Web Search" - CWS variant?
More information -

Download CWShredder from the below link;

Download the above tool and follow the installation prompts.
**Do Not* use CWShredder as a Spyware scanner as it is designed
to remove these trojans only.

Good luck!

Oh yeah I would let Best buy put up with this one. If the laptop is
only a couple of weeks old then, it's best buys problem.

Let the Geek Squad check it out and just make sure you tell them you
are not happy and need a quick turn around.
