I am using Windows xp SP2. I have e-Trust antivirus version 8, windows
firewall enabled and also have antispyware beta installed. I established
internet connection and connected to windows update and installed the latest
security updates for my computer. After this a new program slowdowncpu.exe is
added to the startup program list. I points to a non-existing location in the
file system. A complete scan of the system using the e-Trust antivirus and
antispyware beta doesn't detect anything wrong with the system. I am sure
that the slowdowncpu.exe started only after i connected to the internet. What
is this process and why is it not reported as a virus or spyware?

Do you use a Netgear Router or other device ?

Please submit "slowdowncpu.exe" to Virus Total --
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
The submission will then be tested against almost 2 dozen different AV vendor's
scanners.

Another way to submit is to send the suspect file to the following email address
scan<at>virustotal.com
{ replace <at> with @ } with only the word SCAN as the subject.

Please post back the EXACT results.

I also updated XP to SP2. SlowDownCPU.exe shows up in my Zone Alarm
Internet
Security program list but Zone Alarm will not allow it to do
anything till it is
identified as trusted. File name
C:\WINDOWS\inf\MSI\SlowDownCPU\SlowDownCPU.exe

Has anyone found out what this is?

Did you submit the file for analysis as Dave suggested? A Google for
"SlowdownCPU.exe" brings up some Usenet-sucking site and some sites in
Danish. You should submit the file to Virus Total and then post the
results here.

When attempting to e-mail the file to scan@virustotal.com outlook
displays the
following message:
Outlooked blocked access to the following potentially unsafe
attachments:
SlowDownCPU.exe.

When I click send it looks like it may have sent it anyway. I'll keep
you
posted.
