I am going to be working at a school as a librarian - what's the best
program to keep my kids off of facebook?
TIA

A properly configured firewall at the internet service point - there is
no reason to have webmail, pop mail, proxies, any of the facebook, or
other sites like it - just have the firewall administrator block it.

You'd want to start by prohibiting this at the router as a first step.
That way there's no subvertible software involved. You'll also want to
do your your best to lock down settings on the computer to prohibit
modification of proxy settings, as there are anonymous proxy sites out
there bent on subverting simplistic protections on restricted
websites.

This makes me wonder if there are appliances out there, or a niche
market for schools that have cropped up that bundle a border network
device with updates of whitelists and proxy ban lists of sites, geared
toward such an environment. The market would be pretty big....

Also, there's a mantra of don't try to fix a people problem with
technology. Work with school administrators to have an acceptable
computing use policy with consequences spelled out for violations in
the hands of the kids and have them and their parents sign off on it
before getting to use the library computers.

Caveat: I don't work in any school system, but I'd have to think
there are some folks who've developed some pretty comprehensive
policies, procedures and tech around this, so I'll be interested to
hear other replies.

Best Regards,

It's already easy to do - just don't allow anything except what has been
categorized so that means that if a new Proxy appears next week, you
don't have to worry about it, as users can't get to it unless the web-
content software on the firewall knows the definition of the site....

You guys are awesome!
we used to run a DSL (like the kind I got at home) with 15 computers.
it was slow, the network guys were kind of lame. now we might get a
t1. so, im thinking we can get a router and put that iinto the switch,
and then route all the other 15 computers through the router.
then, im thinking, we can run steady state (free windows download) to
limit what students can access form each of the individual comptuers.
so, the question at hand - do we need to make that firewall/router
computer linux?
can we or should we run it on windows?

I love that idea of saying, "these sites are ok. anything new is not
ok."
