SECURITY BULLETIN: HPSBUX0002-111
Originally issued: 17 February 2000
Last Revised: 1 December 2004
SSRT4878 rev.2 Ignite-UX failed to save /etc/passwd for trusted
systems
-----------------------------------------------------------------
NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this
Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.
The information in this Security bulletin should be acted
upon as soon as possible.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: Ignite-UX failed to save /etc/passwd for trusted
systems.
PLATFORM: HP-UX B.11.00 and B.11.11 only.
**REVISED 02**
SOLUTION: Update to Ignite-UX version B.2.4.307 or subsequent.
Correct all trusted systems which were ignited
using previous versions of Ignite-UX.
**REVISED 02**
MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - Update plus other actions
Update to Ignite-UX version B.2.4.307
or subsequent. Correct all trusted system which
were ignited using previous versions of Ignite-UX.
CHANGE SUMMARY: Revision 01 add MANUAL ACTIONS field
Revision 02 add AFFECTED VERSIONS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
**REVISED 02**
BACKGROUND:
-> For versions of Ignite-UX prior to B.2.4.307 on HP-UX B.11.00
-> and B.11.11 the /etc/passwd file is not preserved in the
-> image. This results in a potential vulnerability for trusted
-> systems only.
-> AFFECTED VERSIONS
Note: To determine if a system has an affected version,
search the output of "swlist -a revision -l fileset"
for an affected fileset. Then determine if the
recommended patch or update is installed.
-> HP-UX B.11.11
-> HP-UX B.11.00
=============
-> Ignite-UX.MGMT-TOOLS
-> action: install revision B.2.4.307 or subsequent and check
-> /etc/passwd on trusted systems ignited from old images
-> END AFFECTED VERSIONS
**REVISED 02**
RESOLUTION:
-> Install Ignite-UX version B.2.4.307 or subsequent for HP-UX
-> B.11.00 and B.11.11. All trusted systems which were ignited
-> with images created with previous versions of Ignite-UX on
-> B.11.11 and B.11.00 must be examined and modified manually.
-> The password field for each account in /etc/passwd must be
-> "*".
-> Alternatively, the issue can be resolved by reigniting all
-> trusted B.11.11 and B.11.00 systems with an image made using
-> Ignite-UX version B.2.4.307 or subsequent.
