My company can remotely access PCs on the network. This is done for
obvious reasons to help the company be more efficient with computer
support.

We have been assured that when they do access our PCs, we will be
informed. My PC has been accessed on several occasions without me being
informed. This concerns me. I don't mind them checking up on me as I
don't surf the net but what does concern me is that someone can access
my PC remotely and do whatever they want. Including surfing the net.

It also raises the question of if it is in fact, someone at my company
or someone else.

Is there any way to tell when someone is remotely accessing your PC?

Your article ID implies that you are in the USA. That being the
case, under the Patriot Act, "backdoors" must be placed into
equipment (I believe there's a phasing-in schedule) with the
intent that it should be -impossible- for the equipment user to
detect that Homeland Security [or other similar authorized organizations]
are accessing the equipment. (No, I don't know how they intend to
implement that.)

I don't think that technology is down to the PC level -yet-: my point
is that even if reliable detection exists today, that detection
might be gone as early as the next virus that gets through, or the
next MS patch release [I'll leave the discussion about distinguishing
between the two categories to others.]

That having been said, -in practice- you can still [mostly] detect
remote accesses, if you have the ability to install software such
as Ethereal. Detection techniques or programs specific to MS Windows
might perhaps get a more detailed response in one of the windows
newsgroups.

Do you know what software they are using for this? Most of the corporate
ones have access controls in that they only allow connection from given
networks - this would reduce your fears of it being somebody not at your
company.
