Hi I have got a couple of customers that have lost some files on there
98 and 2000 PC's, I know there's expensive software able to recover
lost files but wonder if there's any free ones to try.

The files might not be -usefully- recoverable on 2000; apparently
in some cases 2000 and XP scribble over the start of the file.
[Speculation: this might have to do with the way that data can be stored
in the same block as the file attributes]

Active Undelete (www.active-undelete.com) when used in unregistered
mode will recover files up to 64 Kb large. It appears to do a very
thorough job of locating files. It's only $US40 (and the 10-machine
license is currently $US70.)

Sorry, don't mean to sound like a shill: I had occasion a couple of
weeks ago to need some files undeleted; A.U. literally found more than
10,000 more deleted files than the other product I tried. Unfortunately
on my XP Pro system, the only files I've been able to recover intact were
very small GIF files and very small text files.
