I have popup blockers, a spyware remover, & a CWS shredder, but still
I'm spending more time clicking off popups, deleting unwanted bookmarks
from my Favorites list, & deleting unwanted shortcuts from my desktop,
than working with my computer. How do you keep free from these swarms
of pests?

Many of these files are attached to \WINN\system32\. If find many
files attached to this but don't know what they are so don't know which
to delete. Where can I get a directory of file names?

The most tenacious of these pests are Aurora,
banners.searchingbooth.com, ads1.revenue.net,
fad.1115.nyc1.targetnet.com, adserver.sharewareonline.com,
www.smileycentral.com, ads.addynamix.com, net-offers.net, All Jackpots
Online Casino, & All Shots Casino. How do you cut these off?

I keep free of them by using a Mac :-)

But my wife uses a Win XP box, and although a few things sneak through
now and then, she has nothing like you describe. One difference might
be that she uses Firefox rather than IE whenever possible (everywhere
but our stupid bank, but they don't give us spyware - at least not yet!)

One way is to put those email addresses into the hosts file, with say 127.0.0.2
as the ip address.

You didn't mention antivirus. Do you have it? Updated?

Do you update your spyware tools regularly? (Not all of them will check
automatically, or even remind you when it's time to check for updates.)

Some "spyware removers" are actually spyware or cheats. Especially those
aggressively marketed on the web (you get something like 17 web pages
telling you that "you have a problem on your computer and we can fix
it"). See http://www.spywarewarrior.com for advice.

Other than this, I second Mr. Lawrence's advice on using an alternate
browser (or OS). Firefox is an excellent alternative to MSIE. Opera is
nice too, with some added functionality. In my experience, Opera does a
slightly better job at impersonating MSIE, but doesn't seem to get all
java objects working (some hierarchy trees don't collapse when using
Opera).
There are other browsers out there, too. Some with a nice reputation. I
haven't tested any others recently, so I won't offer further advice.

I wouldn't trust any of the defenses to work at a time when the system
already is contaminated. So, the first issue would be to be able to
install the defenses at such a time that the machine is clean.

Also, remember to keep the operating system properly updated, and
up-to-date virus protection should help as well.

Depending on your connection type, some kind of NATting modem would
prevent some attacks (not those where the nuisance attacks through
pages you browse, but those which scan through address ranges trying
to find vulnerable computers). On the other hand, NATting might also
prevent some of your real uses for the connection - I've heard about
problems related to some peer-to-peer implementations, some
VPN set-ups, and so on. My machines are behind a NAT layer, and it
suits my uses, but your needs and requirements may well be different.
