If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
with all the talk of file sharing going away, i would think people are
going to try and go around the issue with a proxy. but this shouldn't
offer too much protection, would it?

if they ip address is traced to the proxy, can it then be traced back
to the isp and the customer? i would think so?

There are direct dangers to using open proxies even for payed proxies
some would argue.

There are much better ways to hide your IP for p2p purposes than using
a proxy. Development is in the early stages but eventually I think
it's going to come through. Take a look at:

And there are Darknets as well...

It depends on the records kept by the proxy. And some people chain
through multiple proxies, knowing that anyone wanting to track them
down would likely have to get court orders against each of the services,
at least for a civil case.

[I would -suspect- that in a criminal case, a judge with the
appropriate jurisdiction would authorize a "john doe" warrant that
could be used to trace through multiple sites. But people who don't
want to be found thread the chain through multiple countries, since it
is difficult to get a multi-country search warrant.]
