My NAV (2001 edition, running on Win 2K Profesional) subscription just
ran out again. In order to renew I must upgrade at a cost of $39.
That's not going to happen.

So now I'm looking into free antivirus software (for personal use).
I've found three (AVG, Avast, and AntiVir), but I have not been able
to locate any current reviews.

I believe my main requirements are:

- dynamically scan incoming email for viruses / trojans etc
(currently using Eudora)
- dynamically scan downloaded files
- periodic scheduled hard drive scans
- Checking for viruses on file access would be good

If anyone can provide opinions on these or similar products, or direct
me to current reviews I'd appreciate it.

Alan

If you've been using 2001 for almost 3 years, why not spend $40 and get
2004?

2004 is a great product and it a great product.

I use avast! 4 Home Edition, i.e. the no-charge version, and am quite
satisfied with it. It can do everything you listed.

AVG and Avast will do, Antivir doesn't

> - dynamically scan downloaded files

All the above do this

Antivir has a scheduler, but isn't all that good

> - Checking for viruses on file access would be good

All the above do this

I'd give a spin to AVG, then if you don't like it you
may try Avast ... I've left Antivir last since it does
not scan incoming mails; on the other side it's
a good AV too and it is the less CPU demanding
one amongst the above; now .. pick your own :-)
